REVIEW: Who Let the Gods Out? By Maz Evans at Polka Theatre until 22 March 2026

‘laughter, surprises and heartwarming moments’ ★★★★★

An hilarious musical adaptation from Maz Evans, with music by Luke Bateman. The audience take their seats and are met with a seemingly ordinary front room where a mother and son repeat the same conversation every day after school. Elliot played by Andy Owens, soon enlightens us with a moving song about his struggles at school and at home.

The skilfully designed staging seamlessly takes us from an ordinary front room to the home of the gods. This is where the story takes a dark turn and Elliot’s fight to save the world begins.

The show is packed with physical comedy, which is met with delight and raucous laughter from the children in the audience. There is also a sprinkling of humorous dialogue directed at the grownups. Harriott O’Grady’s wonderful multi-rolling gave us great comedy timing while playing Patricia Portly Plum. She also gave us moving moments with Jose, Elliots mum, and skilful martial arts while playing the Queen. Thanos played by Jazz Evans was a deliciously dark character the audience loved to hate.  The onlookers were gifted comedic movement sequences and a wonderful display of vocal talent. The chemistry between all five actors gave the ninety minute performance the polish and shine that made it a must see show.

If you’ve have read the book you’ll be delighted to see the story brought to life with great attention to detail and creativity. If you haven’t read the book you can expect, laughter, surprises and heartwarming moments.
