REVIEW: SPACE KARAOKE by Ege Kucucuk at Barons Court Theatre 30 Sept – 4 Oct 2025

‘Relatable characters and emotional moments that shine in this daunting scenario.’ ★★★ ½

It’s the end of the world. Literally. We’re on a space cruise, with Mia (Anna Sylvester) and Dan (Riain Cash). They talk, they fight, Mia smokes, Dan doesn’t like it, they talk some more. Until a meteor strikes Earth and all they can do is watch on, helplessly.

It’s hard not to get excited about a premise like that. Written by Ege Kucucuk, this is surely one of the most original concepts in modern theatre. And yet, Space Karaoke isn’t as fun as its premise or title would suggest. In fact, this emotional two-hander takes us through a journey of grief, loss, and regrets, with two great fleshed-out characters who must face their demons under these outrageous circumstances. As they become effectively two of the last humans alive, there doesn’t seem to be much for them to do except reveal themselves. Wholly and truly. The flashbacks, making great use of the lighting, reveal a deeper side to both of these characters and we learn about their background, what happened to them, and why they’re here, in this space cruise.

Though the dialogue can be a little long-winded at times, it is worth noting nonetheless that the dialogue is indeed its greatest strength. Yalim Danisman and Nikolas Kunesch’s creative and effective direction adds to it to give us a well thought-out piece, with relatable characters and emotional moments that shine in this daunting scenario.  A high concept piece that ends up being about the characters at its core.
