REVIEW: Girl Kisser at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre 7 - 11 April 2026

'queer, boozy and full of lust' ★★★★
This lesbian gig-theatre play is a success! Girl Kisser explores youth, relationships and friendships in a whirlwind one hour show. Following five individuals this play looks at the good, the bad and the ugly. The production feels slightly akin to watching a sitcom, one feels invested in the characters, we are aching to see what happens. This piece is queer, boozy and full of lust!
Girl Kisser initially starts out as what seems like a niche fringe play about lesbianism, situations and partying. The quality and depth of this show is what pushes it to the next level. The well thought out story and dialogue makes this accessible for a variety of audiences. Writer Emily Ambrose creates a strong script that is touching, funny and entertaining. This talented cast delivers it with passion, sentiment and authenticity. Girl Kisser is a show that is intricate and considered though it still feels like a fun night out at the theatre.
Something about this show feels effortless. It is different, and this team makes it work. Whether it’s the multidisciplinary structure, implementing dialogue, music and even dance. Or perhaps it’s simply the messaging; where characters speak about what it’s like to be an LGBT+ person. This could feel preachy, instead it feels real, vulnerable and encourages empathy.
Girl Kisser is an immersive play that looks at queerness, imperfection and chosen family. The show leaves us on somewhat of a cliffhanger. Much like the suspense we feel for this company. Both this show and this team will go far.
